Why Get Water Baptised?
Baptism is an important step of obedience and faith for every follower of Jesus. It does not save us, but it powerfully expresses what God has already done in our hearts through faith in Christ. The Bible shows us many reasons why baptism matters and why believers choose to take this step:
-
Obedience to Jesus’ command
-
Jesus instructed His followers to be baptised as part of discipleship.
-
Matthew 28:19: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them…”
-
-
Following Jesus’ example
-
Jesus Himself was baptised, showing humility and obedience.
-
Matthew 3:16: “When Jesus was baptised, He went up immediately from the water…”
-
-
Public declaration of faith
-
Baptism is an outward sign of an inward decision to follow Christ.
-
Romans 10:9 teaches that confessing faith openly is part of belief.
-
-
Symbol of new life in Christ
-
Going underwater represents dying to the old life. Coming up represents new life.
-
Romans 6:4: “We were buried with Him through baptism… that we also should walk in newness of life.”
-
-
Identification with Christ’s death and resurrection
-
Baptism shows unity with what Jesus did for us.
-
Colossians 2:12: “Buried with Him in baptism… raised with Him through faith.”
-
-
Expression of repentance and forgiveness
-
Baptism follows repentance and points to forgiveness through Christ.
-
Acts 2:38: “Repent and be baptised… for the forgiveness of sins.”
-
-
Entry into the community of believers
-
Baptism connects believers to the body of Christ.
-
1 Corinthians 12:13: “For by one Spirit we were all baptised into one body.”
-
-
A step of faith, not a work that saves
-
Baptism does not save on its own but reflects faith and obedience.
-
Ephesians 2:8-9 teaches that salvation is by grace through faith.
-
If you have placed your faith in Jesus and have not yet been baptised, prayerfully consider taking this step of obedience. Baptism is a meaningful way to publicly declare your faith, follow Jesus’ example, and walk forward in your new life in Christ. Talk with a pastor or church leader about being baptised, and take the next step in your journey of faith.
