Baby Dedication
Baby Dedications are meaningful to many families and churches because they focus on commitment, community, and faith, rather than on a ritual that's believed to save the child.
1. It shows parents’ commitment
At a Baby Dedication, parents publicly promise to raise their child with love, guidance, and faith-based values. It is a way of saying, “We take this responsibility seriously.”
Scripture:
-
Proverbs 22:6 - “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
-
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 - Parents are instructed to teach God’s ways diligently to their children.
2. It invites the church community to help
The dedication is not just about the parents. The church family also commits to support, encourage, and help guide the child as they grow.
Scripture:
-
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 - “Two are better than one… if either of them falls, one can help the other up.”
-
Galatians 6:2 - “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
3. It follows a biblical example
While baby dedication is not directly commanded in Scripture, the Bible highlights parents intentionally placing children before God.
Scripture:
-
Luke 2:22-40 - Mary and Joseph presented Jesus at the temple as a child.
-
1 Samuel 1:27-28 - Hannah dedicated Samuel to the Lord.
4. It respects a child’s future choice
Baby dedication emphasises that faith is a personal decision the child will make later in life, when they are able to understand and choose for themselves.
Scripture:
-
Romans 14:12 - “Each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.”
-
Joshua 24:15 - “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve.”
5. It reminds everyone that children are a gift
Baby Dedications celebrate the belief that children are blessings from God and should be cared for intentionally.
Scripture:
-
Psalm 127:3 - “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.”
-
Mark 10:14 - Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me.”
6. It strengthens family and church unity
Sharing this moment in church builds stronger relationships between families and reinforces shared faith and values.
Scripture:
-
Ephesians 4:3 - “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”
-
Hebrews 10:24-25 - Encouraging one another and growing together in faith.
